TOPIC: Internal Testing of Employee Computer Skills
HOST: Thierren Clark
SPEAKER: Thierren Clark
DESCRIPTION: With the current job market turnover everyone is
searching for the employee with the "perfect" skill set -- or at
least a very close match. Mr. Thierren Clark from Kaye Scholer, et. al.
hosted this meeting. Mr. Clark has devised a testing system that his firm
uses to test their employee's competency with their software. Mr. Clark
will show us one of his sample tests and explain the following:
- How often the test is given to the employee;
- The advantages and disadvantages of testing employees; and
- How it will affect the employee's continuing association with their
company.
Some questions that come to mind are -- how does this testing system
relate to the EEOC guidelines? What happens to repeat offenders,
especially persons who have tenure with the company? How does his company
use this test in accordance with Employee Reviews or yearly evaluations?
NOTES FROM MEETING: Thierren is involved in the interview process
for new applicants. New employees are trained then tested on what they
learned (multiple choice written test). There are specific skill sets that
are required for each job function. Acquiring these skills sets directly
impacts each person's performance review. Training is mandatory. The IT
department suggests who needs what training and HR manager sends them a
message to attend (required). The staff knows HR's expectations up front
and are expected to maintain their computer skills. The skill path,
failure and success rate of each employee is well documented.
