THURSDAY, MARCH 22, 2001

LOCATION: Jenkens & Gilchrist
1919 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC

TOPIC: Helpful Training Tips

HOST: Rochelle Bungie

NOTES FROM THE MEETING:

Member introductions to group and each member was give the opportunity to present one current issue that they would like assistance on resolving from their firm. Their issue was presented before the group – anyone who had experienced the same problem and had a solution responded. I promised to put all unresolved issues in my notes to request assistance from other group members. This issues are listed below.

  • Cynthia DeArman, Kilpatrick, Stockman – She experienced "Conflicts between the NIC cards and the Drivers" when their Dell "CPI" laptops were used with their Docking Stations.  Another member stated they experienced the same problem with their Dell CPI but they were using Windows 95 with Office 97. The resolved the conflict by resetting the "IP Addresses."
  • Greta Cox, Drinker, Briddle – They are using Windows 2000 with Office.97 and she is looking for a conversion software tool that would produce minimal document cleanup in Word.
  • Candy Truss - suggested "DocX" as a possible solution.
  • Rochelle Bungie - I received an email from Donna Payne [DonnaPayne@payneconsulting.com], in reference to conversion tools. "Donna stated that there are two primary vendors for conversion of WP documents to Word: Microsystems and Levit and James. Microsystems is based out of Chicago, Levit and James from Chantilly, VA. These packages both do a good job with the conversion from our experience."
  • Karen Sykes, Ballard & Spahr - I received an email from Karen stating the following: "I'm in Baltimore until mid-April. One thought for a future meeting -- we are in the midst of converting our users from WP8 to Word 2000 and are using the Payne macro suite. They have a simply wonderful conversion package and have been truly outstanding in helping us with our conversion. They respond to all requests extremely quickly and have developed a numbering suite that is phenomenal."
  • Sonya Morshauser, Bracewell & Patterson -- no issues to discuss.
  • Venessa Lawrence, Van Ness & Feldman – looking for suggestions to make training tips and tricks, training schedule and materials available to her Users.
  • Rochelle suggested creating public folders in Outlook, place information there and have a desktop link to the folder. Rhonda Gray stated that she uses their IntraNet Portal to display her information and she changes it monthly. Rhonda offered to send some examples to assist. It was also suggested that she use her HelpDesk calls for "tips" to Users
  • Kasey Muer and Maxine Hollis, Cole, Raywid & Braverman – they just finished an iManage upgrade to version 5.3. They noticed that the "echol" directory does not synchronize in Windows 2000 and they have been experiencing printer problems with the HP450. Please forward any suggestions to Kasey.
  • Angela Holland, Powell, Goldstein – Their firm went to mandatory re-training for all employees, 3 hours a week for 5 weeks.
  • Rhonda Gray, Akin Gump – writes all the training information for the trainers; how to tips, etc. Attorney training is one day and the secretaries are 3 days. Rhonda suggested "techrepublic.com" as a good website – they send daily tips to her.

Software Demonstration and Information

Since we used a large amount of time assisting one another with the above issues, I only had time to demonstrate three of the software listed below. I used my laptop and projector to show how beneficial SoftSkills, Microsoft Office 2000 and the CD for Upgrading and Repairing PCs. Everyone had an opportunity to review the CD covers and write down any pertinent information.

    • SoftSkills Interactive Proficiency-Level Training by CompuMaster (3 levels, Novice, Intermediate and Advanced);
    • The Office Survival Guide -- Solutions that Work by CompuMaster -- reference CD with tips, tricks, quick help and instructions for using Access, Excel, Word and PowerPoint;
    • Upgrading and Repairing PCs and Networks -- Que's Reference CD featuring fully searchable electronic editions of its 11th and 12th editions for Upgrading & Repairing PCs and its 2nd edition for the network. The CD also includes video clips of the author describing his upgrade and repair techniques (for those of us who where more than one office cap);
    • Microsoft Office 2000 Professional Suite Solutions -- CD containing fully seachable electronic editions of Access, Excel, PowerPoint and Word Bible books.

The above Technical Training Resources as well as many other ones may be purchased as follows:
