This meeting is dedicated to discussing what upgrades or other challenges
your firm may be facing. With any luck, someone else in our group
can give your some insight!!
Please RSVP to Jennifer
Holehouse and include a short blurb regarding what is going on at your
firm so we can prepare a synopsis for everyone. Here is what we have
so far:
Coudert Brothers: JOYCE JARRETT
"We just finished rolling out CompuLaw (docketing software) for our
litigation and trade group. We are rolling out DeltaView in the next few
weeks. We are scheduled to roll out Windows 2000 with Office XP and
upgrading DOCs Open, InterAction, Softwise MacroSuite and Tutor Pro. We
will be getting all new hardware with this roll out and all of this is to
be done by the beginning of summer. It will be a very busy year."
Fulbright: VIKKY JONES
"We are in the process of converting from WP8 to MSWord 97; we're
currently using iManage (v5.3) and Outlook. Plans for the future may
include moving to the XP environment, but our home office hasn't made a
decision yet; they are also looking at the Laptop environment with docking
stations for our attorneys. We're also using Legal MacPac, Docxchange
Client, DeltaView, Full Authority, Rightfax, Elite (billing) and DTE
timekeeping). All of our attorneys are using BlackBerrys."
Arent Fox: VALERIE BEYERS
Unfortunately, Valerie can't make the meeting but you can email her about
her new stuff at BeyersV@arentfox.com:
"I know it's late but if you want to share this at the meeting in
case someone wants to contact me, here's what's happening at Arent Fox:
#1. We just finished going from a non-dms environment to iManage (infoRite
5.3) in our DC office. It took us 5 weeks from start to finish for over
600 people. We trained during the day and imported documents four
consecutive weekends in December. This came right on the heels of us
converting the entire firm to the MS Word 2000 standard from WordPerfect 8
starting in June and ending in mid-October. We used Microsystems'
DocXchange to convert our documents and are now using Legal MacPac and
DocXtools on the desktop. #2. We've been using Windows 2000 for 1.5 years
and have no plans to upgrade to Windows XP (or Office XP)this year. #3.
Our standard desktops are HP-III's with anywhere from 400 to 700 mhz
processing speed and minimum of 128 RAM. Approximately 20% of our users -
mostly attorneys - use a laptop in place of a pc. We do not allow end
users to install any software on firm computers. Business-related software
installs are approved by the IT Director. #4. Approximately 40% of our
attorneys use Blackberry devices and PDA's. #5. On the software side, our
major projects for this year are: - upgrade iManage client to DeskSite
6.0.1a, iManage server to Worksite Server 7.1, and install MailSite 3.0.1a
on some if not all desktops - install Call Pilot software in NY office
which will integrate voice mail with MailSite - replace CompareRite with
DeltaView - install iScrub (removes Word metadata) - upgrade to Carpe Diem
4.1 - educate users for all new software and software upgrades Most of
these projects will be done during Q1 and Q2 of this year."

better version of our Legal MacPac 2000; Using Word 97 (Office 97); Using
Win95, looking forward to upgrading new laptops to WinXP/OfficeXP; not
doing a sweeping changeover at the moment. Using CompareRite, but we have
piloted and will eventually implement "DeltaView" (after all the
fixes); Using CrossWords to convert documents from WP6.1 to W97; Using
DocXCleanup tools to clean up converted documents (A child of the
DocXChange family); Still using iManage 5.2; Our Partners are using
Blackberries; eFax delivery : faxes delivered to user mail box (nothing
off the desktop yet!); Carpe Diem/CD Tracker for tracking time and we use
Elite for billing; Lotus Notes for eMail and a variety of other database
functions; MOVING to PENNSYLVANIA & 12th on Jan 18th, and will be
operational (????) on Jan 22. Keep your fingers crossed. Happy New Year to
all! May it bring you many blessings!"

"In 2001, we pulled Novell off the servers; Replaced 90% of the
desktops with newer computers or laptops for attorneys; Upgraded from
Windows '95 to Windows 2000 on the desktops and back end; Upgraded from
Office '95 to Office 2000 (using DeltaView, DocXTools and MacPac);
Migrated from Lotus Notes 5 to Outlook 2000; Upgraded from DocsOpen 3.9 to
PowerDocs. Initiatives for this year include: Implementation of
Blackberries or other wireless device; Implementation (finally) of a
firm-wide intranet (I truly think we are the last firm to do this); Heavy
extranet development Possible implementation of a storage area network;
I'm finding this discussion thread very interesting!"
Covington & Burling: DEBORAH
PAPINEAU
"Here's a little about what we are doin'.... Some of us have been
testing iManage and the roll out has begun...eBriefs are a hot
topic...trial presentation software is another one...have been on Windows
2000 for the past year or so...web based video is another hot topic
here...know only some basic stuff...digital cameras are popular....pdf
format is really hot here.
Look forward to seeing you at the meeting."
Sughrue Mion: JENNIFER HOLEHOUSE
"We are in the middle of a pilot rollout of the new iManage (eh, or
should I say DeskSite) and we have a few glitches here and there that I'd
love to talk to others about. We are also rolling out Windows 2000 (no XP
yet) and my combined rollout training is only 2 hours long (bet you wanna
know how I do that)! We are also preparing our yearly budget - yuck and I
just tool a cool class at PPI called Windows 2000 for Help Desk
Professionals that I'd highly recommend. Also, I'd like to hear if anyone
knows anything about web-based video conferencing. Isn't that
enough?!"
Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy:
ALLAN SCHNEIDER
"The newest thing at our firm has been the conversion to Office 2000
with Docs 3.9 about four months ago. We've shook most of it out but we do
have our surprises every now and then. We've also done some work with
LiveNote on remote transcript viewing and been through a demo, through
WebEx, of their Instant Messaging system."
Silverstein and Mullens: JUDY PRITZKER
Unfortunately, Judy can't make the meeting, but you can email her about
her new stuff at pritzkerjl@silmul.bipc.com:
" 1. We are getting ready for a rollout of Windows 2000,
Outlook 2000, and Office 2000 in early March.
2. We continue to support more wireless devices (Jornadas,
Blackberrys, Omnisky, and Palm).
3. We are moving to Nextel pagers in the systems department
to have a one-device system for page, phone, and radio.
4. We continue to use videoconferencing (though not
web-based) with the Galaxy system. We just installed ceiling-mounted
microphones and speakers for improved audio."
Dow, Lohnes & Albertson: CORNELIA
DEBOSE
Unfortunately Cornelia can't make the meeting, but you can email her about
her new stuff at cdebose@dlalaw.com:
"We are at the end of training our staff on an upgrade to Legal
MacPac Numbering 2000. Starting next week we will begin a firmwide rollout
of Windows 2000 (operating system only) and an upgrade to iManage. This
week ends the pilot stage of that rollout."
Hogan & Hartson: CAROLYN EDWARDS
"Hogan & Hartson completed an upgrade to Windows/Office 2000 and
DeltaView in our international offices; we are about to begin an upgrade
to Windows/Office 2000, DeltaView and iManage in our domestic offices
beginning the end of the month; and will then proceed with an iManage
roll-out in our international offices."
McKenna& Cuneo: LISA KAUTZ
Unfortunately, Lisa can't make the meeting, but you can email her about
her
new stuff at lisa_kautz@McKennaCuneo.com:
"We are testing desktops and laptops for a proposed rollout. Our
desktops have not been upgraded since the fall of 1996, and some of our
laptops are not longer supported by the manufacturer -- so they need to be
replaced. We are upgrading our OS (only) to 2000 so we anticipate a smooth
upgrade. We hope to start a pilot of the new desktops by the end of the
week - once testing is complete."
Ballard & Spahr: KAREN SYKES
Unfortunately, Karen can't make the meeting, but you can email her about
her new stuff at sykesk@ballardspahr.com:
"Our firm migrated to Office 2000 this Spring -- things are finally
calming down at this point. We are using the Payne Macros (Numbering
Assistant for Outline numbering which is just fantastic). We are also
using DeltaView, RightFax, Word 2000 and Outlook 2000."
