Summary:

We are all looking for ways to help our staff members be less dependent on us. One way to is provide help topics through "Class Clips" which are QuickTime movies that teach short subjects. Jennifer will demonstrate how she utilities this tool in her firm and how you can create your own movies.

HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

  • Lots of Memory (Jen’s PC has 254)
  • Windows compatible sound card
  • Microphone Headset for hands free audio recording
  • Need lots of space on your server for the movies.

SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

1. A screen capture program. Recommendation: Camtasia by Tech Smith ($149.95). http://www.techsmith.com/products/camtasia/camtasia.asp.  Records audio/video screen movements; includes an editing tool; saves in industry standard formats; includes pack and play wizard so you can package the movies with the player.

2. A video editing program. Recommendation: Camtasia Producer (comes bundled with the software above)

3. A viewing program. Recommendation: QuickTime by Apple (free). http://www.apple.com/quicktime.  You must have the most recent version of Direct X installed on PC for it to view properly in a web environment. You can get this from http://www.microsoft.com. Also, make sure you have you PC sound card selected under QuickTime Preferences/Sound Out or you’ll get skipping audio output.

There are other viewers on the market -- just test what is best for your situation.  Windows Media Player is also free but did not show the final product very clearly in our environment.

BASIC STEPS

  • Create a cool PowerPoint intro and end page for all your movies (not necessary).
  • Use Camtasia to record the movies
  • Keep them short.
  • You can record in small segments to keep mistakes to a minimum, then edit and segments together using Camtasia.
  • Create a rough outline to follow as you record your movie.
  • Pause for 5 seconds after pressing record before you speak to allow movie to load.
  • Close any unnecessary programs during recording to maximize memory usage.
  • Use an “animated” voice (as if you are talking to a class) so your movie doesn’t sound dull.
  • Use Camtasia to edit, add special affects and produce your movies. Jen produces them in QuickTime.MOV format.
  • Post on your intranet for viewing by all. The presentation and organization is up to you and your web master.

Note from Pam to all:

Jennifer handed out CD's of a 14.5 MB movie she created using Camtasia which walked through the entire process.  Since this file is too big to post on the website, she has graciously offered to snail-mail a copy of the CD to any member who emails her their name and address.
